Skin Customization And Capes Are Coming To Minecraft Earth

Players searching through Minecraft Earth’s files have found references to upcoming skin customization options, along with mentions of new capes and emotes.

Users have decoded the leaked APK to reveal the files and images inside. This is surprisingly easy to do, as nowadays file archivers such as WinRAR and 7Zip can open up any APK file with just one click.

Skin Customization In Pocket Edition

Skin customization was actually added last month to Minecraft PE as a hidden feature and can be unlocked using an addon. The skin customization files found in Minecraft Earth are almost identical to those used in the Pocket Edition, which makes sense because they both run Bedrock.

However, many of Minecraft Earth’s files seem to have been accidentally copied across from P.E. For instance, Minecraft Earth’s files contain references to Realms, End Cities and Pillagers, none of which are planned to be in Minecraft Earth. So how can we be sure that skin customization is actually coming to Minecraft Earth and isn’t also there by mistake?

Thankfully, Minecraft Earth has a distinct art style in comparison to classic Minecraft. Compare the two sets of items below.

On the left are Minecraft Earth blocks, and on the right are Minecraft P.E blocks. Note the drop shadow on the Minecraft Earth blocks.

After seeing this, it would then make sense to assume the following icons are made especially for Minecraft Earth.

These 4 icons were found inside the Minecraft Earth files in the same folder as the skin editor. From the icons, we now know we’ll be able to change our skins clothes and body type and to choose them an emote.

The Dressing Room

The dressing room is where all skin customization takes place in Minecraft Earth. Below is a screenshot from an early version of the Minecraft P.E dressing room.

Since Minecraft Earth is played in portrait mode, it will look slightly different to the above image. However, it gives us a good idea for how customization will work; players will choose a body part to edit and then select a style from a few premade designs.

There’s plenty of options to choose from, so we’ve listed them all below.

  • Hair
    • Short bob
    • Coiled long
    • Curly pigtails
    • Medium curly hair
    • Mohawk
  • Beard
    • Chin
    • Full
    • Goatee
    • Short
  • Body
    • Large
    • Medium
    • Small
    • Smaller
  • Limbs
    • Prosthetic forearm
    • Prosthetic full arm
    • Prosthetic hand
    • Pegleg
    • Prosthetic leg
    • Mermaid
  • Tops
    • Shirt
    • Dress
    • Long sleeve (2)
    • Tanktop
  • Bottoms
    • Brown pants
    • Shorts
    • Skirt
  • Accessories
    • Backpack
    • Hat
    • Headphones
    • Gloves
    • Hoodie
  • Capes
    • Minecon 2011
    • Minecon 2012

    • Minecon 2014
    • Minecon 2015
    • Minecon 2016
    • Mojang Cape 2016
    • Pancape
  • Emotes
    • Celebration
    • Clap
    • Wave (2)
    • Dinnerbone
    • Pickaxe

It’s still unclear what Mojang plans to use these new emotes for. Maybe they’ll be visible to friends you add or will display each time you level up, however, as of right now they don’t seem to have a practical use.

It’s also likely that some clothing items will have to be bought using rubies, for instance unlocking a new emote. This isn’t bad news, as rubies can easily be earnt for free in Minecraft Earth.

Map Updates

Also discovered in the files were plans for the introduction of a Snapmap-like feature. It would display your nearby friends Minecraft characters on the map, allowing you to see where they are in real-time.

The addition would make multiplayer feel more integrated and natural, however, it doesn’t come without its drawbacks. With many kids playing Minecraft Earth security is a major concern for Mojang, and such a feature would probably add dangers to the game.

We don’t yet know how Mojang plans to make this feature safer to use, but we’ll be posting an article discussing this new feature soon.
